This feedback report summarises the key perspectives and insights presented during Circular Wallonia Days 2025, “50 Shades of Minerals: Extending & Improving Mineral Resource Lifespans – Opportunities, Challenges and Future Perspectives”.
Across regional, national and European perspectives, a common message emerged: End-of-Waste (EoW) is not a barrier to valorisation, but a structuring tool that provides legal certainty, improves product quality and strengthens market confidence. The plenary sessions and panel debates highlighted the importance of clear and operational frameworks, better communication, simplification of procedures, and continued dialogue between authorities and industry.
The presentations and panel discussions illustrated how different regional approaches coexist within a European context, while examining the role of technical standards, environmental controls, third-party certification and traceability requirements. They also addressed the implications of the revised Construction Products Regulation (CPR) and its expectations regarding performance, environmental sustainability and digital product information.
From an industrial perspective, the sessions explored both opportunities and constraints associated with the use of recycled mineral materials, including applications in infrastructure works, cement production, prefabrication and soil remediation. Examples of innovation presented during the event ranged from alternative binders and clinker substitutions to advanced sorting technologies and large-scale redevelopment of industrial brownfields.
The report captures the key messages emerging from the plenary sessions, presentations and panel debates, covering regulatory harmonisation, certification pathways, economic viability, industrial uptake and cross-border recognition of End-of-Waste status. Together, these elements show how End-of-Waste can support industrial competitiveness, resource efficiency and climate action when co-developed by policymakers, industry and research actors.
