GreenWin Mission to Bilbao: Building Circular Bridges Between Wallonia and the Basque Country to foster concrete cooperation opportunities in circularity within the mineral industry

From 3 to 5 June 2026GreenWin will lead an international mission to Bilbao, in the heart of the Basque Country (Spain), in collaboration with its Walloon and Basque ecosystem partners.
The goal: to foster concrete cooperation opportunities in circularity within the mineral industry, strengthening ties between two dynamic innovation hubs committed to low‑carbon industrial transition.

Connecting two innovation ecosystems

Following the success of the Circular Wallonia Days 2025, this mission aims to turn dialogue into tangible partnerships between companies, universities, and research centres.
The Walloon delegation, comprising around 10 to 12 organisations, will showcase the region’s expertise in circular construction materialsmineral resource valorisation, and environmental technologies.

The mission is organised by GreenWin, Wallonia’s competitiveness cluster for circular materials, alongside its key partners: ACLIMA (Basque Environment Cluster), AWEXWBIREMIND Wallonia, and WIN4C – University of Liège’s initiative for circular construction materials.

Why Bilbao? Why Wallonia?

Both Bilbao and Wallonia stand out for their strong industrial foundations and shared commitment to innovation-driven sustainability.

The Basque Country offers:

  • A robust industrial ecosystem specialising in advanced materials and circular processes.

  • Leading research institutions including Tecnalia.

  • Innovation hubs such as Bizkaia Waste Lab.

  • Strong policy support for the circular economy through agencies like IHOBE.

Wallonia, on the other hand, brings:

  • A dense industrial base in mineral and recycling sectors.

  • Strong research capacities across universities and applied centres.

  • Dynamic circular economy initiatives such as REMIND Wallonia.

  • Innovation projects focused on mineral circularity and low‑carbon materials.

Strategic themes for cooperation

Throughout the three‑day mission, partners will explore cutting‑edge themes such as:

  • Low‑carbon materials derived from secondary mineral resources.

  • CO₂ mineralisation and accelerated carbonation.

  • High‑value recycling of construction, demolition, and industrial waste.

  • Digital traceability, data platforms, and AI for circular mineral value chains.

  • Standards, certification, and market uptake for circular construction products.

  • Depollution and valorisation of complex waste streams, including sediments.

A programme rich in exchange and discovery

Day 1 – Tuesday 2 June: Arrival and informal networking dinner.
Day 2 – Wednesday 3 June (ACLIMA, Bilbao): Institutional opening session, participant pitches, technical round tables, project presentations and networking dinner.
Day 3 – Thursday 4 June (Bizkaia Science & Technology Park): Visits to Bizkaia Waste Lab and Tecnalia, technical deep‑dives, city activity on the river, and dinner option.
Day 4 – Friday 5 June: Working brunch and closing session, followed by departures.

Walloon and Basque projects in the spotlight

The mission will highlight top Walloon projects, including:

  • CIBER – Circular mineral flows and industrial symbiosis.

  • CARBOC – Carbon capture and mineral carbonation.

  • DUN3ES – Sustainable mineral resources and circular construction.

  • REPLIC – Deployment of circular material solutions.

  • WASTE2CEM – Waste stream conversion into cementitious materials.

Basque partners will feature:

  • Bizkaia Waste Lab, a platform for circular waste innovation.

  • Tecnalia Circular Materials Research, supporting low‑carbon industrial innovation.

  • IHOBE government programmes for circular industry.

  • ACLIMA Member Projects, driving waste valorisation and mineral reuse.

Looking ahead to European cooperation

Beyond the technical discussions, the mission will pave the way for:

  • Joint R&D projects on circular mineral materials.

  • Industrial pilot projects for CO₂ mineralisation and waste valorisation.

  • Knowledge exchange between research institutions and industries.

  • Preparation of European collaborative projects under Horizon Europe and Interreg.

By connecting Wallonia and the Basque Country, GreenWin and its partners aim to strengthen transregional cooperation toward a cleaner, smarter, and more circular industrial future.
