Find out how to model bio-electrochemical systems for the removal of pollutants from soil and water!

Meet Prof. Michele MASCIA from University of Cagliari at the 8th edition of GreenWin's International Conferences on Green Chemistry & White Biotech on 28 & 29 September 2022 at Sart-Tilman University Campus of ULiège, dedicated to “Digital Transformation: Innovation booster for Green Chemistry and White Biotechs”.

Bio-electrochemical systems (BES) may be a sustainable alternative to conventional bio-based technologies for water treatment and soil remediation, as the processes occurs with simultaneous production of hydrogen or electricity. BES exploit the activity of electroactive biofilms onto the electrode surface, that use chemicals in the solution as substrates, so promoting their removal. Moreover, the activity of the biofilm may depolarise the electrode, so that the cell potential of bio-assisted electrolysis of water may be considerably lower than the potential of conventional electrolysis.

A mathematical model of BES presented here combines transport equations and kinetics of the involved processes with the Poisson’s equation to obtain a comprehensive model under transient conditions. The model was built and solved with parameters obtained from experimental data, and applied to the different systems The 3D and 2D space-time profiles of the main variables of the processes, such as electric potential, concentrations and current densities were obtained and used to predict the performances of the system considered in different scenarios.

Michele MASCIA is a Chemical Engineer, PhD, Full Professor of Chemical Plant design since 2019, at the Dept of Mechanical Chemical and Materials Engineering of the University of Cagliari. His research activities focus on electrochemical engineering and applied electrochemistry. The main processes studied are the electrolysis of water (conventional, bio-assisted and photo-assisted), conventional and microbial fuel cells. The main applications are energy harvesting and conversion, water and wastewater treatment, and remediation of polluted soils. Fundamental and applied studies cover design, characterisation and modelling of reactors, simulation of plants, electrocatalysis and reaction mechanisms.

Michele MASCIA has authored more than 90 papers in peer reviewed journals, about 30 articles in conference proceedings and book chapters. He has presented more than 50 communications at national and international conferences as a speaker. Michele MASCIA is a member of UniCa's governing bodies: Senato Accademico (Academic Senate); Comitato Unico di Garanzia (gender equality and anti-discrimination committee); Statute revision commission.

About the Conferences…

The purpose of the conferences is to screen the digital technology used to boost activities in the fields of green chemistry and white biotechnology around the world, to share knowledge and encourage the creation of new R&D projects in the sector at regional and international scale.
The first day, on 28 September, will focus on Data Science while the second one, on 29 September, will focus on Artificial Intelligence. Both days will be animated by Tieneke Van Hooland, from Bio.be by essenscia.
