Biobased products are often seen as a way to reduce fossil fuel depletion and/or to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. This was the original idea beyond the promotion of biofuels in EU. Nevertheless, an holistic approach has to be adopted in order to avoid pollution trade-offs. This is the strength of the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology. By evaluating quantitatively a lot different environmental impacts along the whole life cycle, LCA allows an objective comparison of a biobased product and its fossil counterpart. Some case studies will be presented in order to highlight the complexity of developing real sustainable solutions from an LCA point of view.   In the case of biobased products, the agricultural phase is usually critical because of the use of fertilizers. These latter need a lot fossil resources for the production and generate field emissions contributing to eutrophication and climate change.

Prof. Angélique LÉONARD obtained her Chemical Engineering degree (1998) and PhD in Applied Sciences (2003) from University of Liège. She was appointed by the Belgian Fund for Scientific Research (FNRS) from 1998 to 2009. She then became Professor within the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Liège, in the chair “Chemical processes and sustainable development”. She was the head of this Department from 2011 to 2015. She then became the director of the Research Unit in Chemical Engineering. Her research interest are: convective drying of deformable porous materials (including sludge), sludge treatment (dewatering and drying), X-ray microtomography as a tool to characterize the texture of porous materials. She also leads a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) team with more than 15 years expertise. LCA related works includes environmental product declarations (EPDs), LCA of processes, training in various fields: chemical and energy industry, waste management, biofuels, agrofood sector, building materials, batteries. She has authored/ co-authored over 140 refereed research publications and about 120 conference proceedings. She cooperates as Referee for about 15 international journals.
