Manufacture of sustainable products and materials
Green chemistry is founded on two basic principles:
The sustainable integration and roll-out of materials
Construction, which develops new porcesses for rolling out innovative materials and ensures their integration in resources and systems reducing the environmental footprint
Treatment and recovery of waste and effluents
The environmental sector develops new methods for treating effluents and recovering secondary materials produced by human activity.
The development and organisation of training programmes is vital to the success of the GreenWin project. The skills acquired in the cluster are passed on in training with a view to fostering economic development and employment.
There are two types of training: training linked directly to a single project or to various projects and linked with one of the cluster’s strategic hubs.
The treatment and conversion of material uses more energy than any other industrial activity and is among those producing the highest level of carbon dioxide emissions. The scarcity of non-renewable resources is a critical problem for Europe. Specific emphasis is placed on the development of local systems promoting the use of local resources.
Around 40% of the materials extracted from the ground are used in the construction industry, which is itself directly or indirectly responsible for 40% of carbon dioxide emissions.
Aside from the potential recovery of waste as raw material, its management represents a major problem in our consumer-oriented society. Solutions designed to reduce the quantity and toxicity of waste must be put in place.
